If you needed an example of a “gaming keyboard,” the Horde Aimo is it. Roccat Horde AIMO keyboard review A cataclysmic collision of keyboard worlds. As well as that unexpected trick, the tactile knob lets you control the volume, LED brightness, switch between individual windows instead of using Alt-Tab, cycle through different RGB profiles and change the overall colour scheme of the keyboard when you press its corresponding key. I really enjoyed how it felt to type, it was crisp but not loud and soft but not too light that you were left wondering if you actually hit the key properly. Roccat Horde AIMO keyboard review A cataclysmic collision of keyboard worlds. Roccat's Horde AIMO is a pretty great gaming keyboard thanks to its "membranical" switches, and sweet Windows dial. Roccat is slowly building up its AIMO RGB peripheral range. There are five macro keys on the left and on the upper-right side of the keyboard, there’s a long stretch of buttons and a massive dial, which I had initially thought was a volume turn-wheel, but oh no, this was a lot more sophisticated than that. It felt extremely busy for my liking with not enough spreading out of the buttons. ROCCAT has introduced what it calls “membranical” keys – basically, they’re still membrane keys, but they have an extra layer that adds a tactile feel bringing the best of both worlds between the membrane and mechanical. Other than the lower MSRP ($89.99) in comparison to other Roccat keyboards, this new keyboard … Also, once you have learned the way of the dial, you do become quite reliant on it. In some parts it looks like it wants to be all stealthy and angular, whereas others it’s smooth and organic. That’s not usually something too far-fetched to assume. This is mostly down to the Horde AIMO’s subdued lighting. Roccat's Horde AIMO is a pretty great gaming keyboard thanks to its "membranical" switches, and sweet Windows dial. As much as I love my mechanical keyboard, sharing a room with someone who’s ears work when using one can lead to glares, tuts and, on occasions, that look. To activate your chosen function, just press the person key again. The issue here, in my opinion, is the lack of actual support. I found the undo/redo option particularly handy. Black, with some superfluous edges and a somewhat oversized footprint. Suffice it to say, it’s fine. Usually I’d spend a lot of effort up front dissecting a keyboard’s design, but the Roccat Horde Aimo has a ton going on and I don’t want to keep you here all day. The overall look of the keyboard is quite confused. To really get started with the keyboard, Roccat’s special software is needed, and it was a slog to use. This could be handy if you forget the macros you set for particular games. I think if it was a little on the cheaper side, it wouldn’t feel like such a hard sell as it currently sits at $99 on ROCCAT’s website. They can be easily configured to your needs using Roccat’s Swarm software. First we had the Kone mouse, now the Horde keyboard and, say in a padded bag behind me, is the Khan AIMO headset. All in all the ROCCAT Horde Aimo is a decent keyboard with some great features, feels satisfying to type on and the “big wheel” element is genius, but I would hold out on buying just yet as I think ROCCAT can and will do much better. Unfortunately, it just comes across as awkward. Basically, what you have here is a single sheet of little rubber contact domes rather than individual switches for each key. My enthusiasm for the big wheel changed when I discovered that what looks like a person icon (the key right next to the dial) activates Windows 10 Dial support – you know, the fancy stuff that the natty Surface Dial peripheral does. Fortunately, the Horde AIMO is not so shouty about its lightshow. Node Audio Finds its Chinese Distributor in Cambridge. The design that ROCCAT chose this time puzzled me as I found that there was a lot of starved space crying out to be made better use of around the periphery, hence adding to its bulky stature. Roccat has a very particular aesthetic, a bit busy-looking for my tastes, but it’s inoffensive. I’m quite the fan of ROCCAT, not just because they have “cat” in their company’s name and it sounds cool to try and say, but because I’ve always found their products to be of excellent quality. However, bit by bit, it grew on me. However, it does take some button bashing to get what you want. As is the very nature of its closed-in, island-style membrane keys, you only get light escaping from each individual letter cut-out rather than having it spill out the bottom of each individual key cap. This dial can control everything from media to the keyboard’s color scheme to the RGB backlighting’s brightness. I believe ROCCAT have a great template with the Horde Aimo, something that could be amazing but isn’t quite there yet. This is the same tool that you can use to alter the RGB lighting. There are five macro keys on the left-side of the board and, on the top edge, what looks to be a cardholder. We recently took the Roccat Kone AIMO mouse for a spin. I also found that with the “wrist support” attached, it took up a ton of room on my desk. It looked awkward and oversized and the lighting wasn’t as bright as I was expecting.
